Income Tax Due Dates: The General Pattern to Know

Indian income tax compliance follows a fairly consistent annual rhythm — here's the typical pattern.

The Financial Year Cycle

India's financial year runs from 1st April to 31st March. Income earned in a financial year (FY) is assessed and taxed in the following assessment year (AY).

Typical Filing Timelines

Individuals and entities not requiring an audit generally file returns by 31st July following the end of the financial year.

Entities requiring a tax audit typically get until 31st October.

Advance tax is usually payable in four instalments during the financial year itself — mid-June, mid-September, mid-December, and mid-March.

TDS returns are generally filed quarterly, with due dates falling roughly a month after each quarter ends.

Why Deadlines Sometimes Shift

The government occasionally extends deadlines due to portal issues, natural disasters, or other circumstances via official notification. The dates above reflect the usual pattern, not a guarantee for any specific year.

Exact due dates for the current assessment year can be extended by government notification. Please confirm with us before a filing deadline to avoid penalties.
